Having taken early retirement in order to travel Australia, Graeme and Tracey Steele were faced with a serious ‘what should we do?’ moment when war broke out in the Middle East a week before they were due to set off.
But, after much debate, the couple decided they couldn’t ignore the call of the open road and – despite some pain at the bowser – they have absolutely no regrets.
“We decided we’d proceed and monitor situation as we go,” said Graeme. “We are not time restricted so we figured that if we have to stop for a week or two, we can do that.”
The pair left Melbourne on March 5 and spent three weeks travelling in South Australia, through the Barossa and the Eyre Peninsula, and then crossed the Nullarbor over Easter.
Graeme and Tracey have been enjoying the adventure.
“Diesel was readily available at all roadhouses, with prices at $3.60 to $3.70 per litre,” said Graeme. “It’s important to just follow the advice and take what you need but no more … so forget the Jerry cans … these communities also rely on passing trade to support them.”
Graeme and Tracey, who plan to be away for eight months, travel in a 22’ Crusader Musketeer Empress towed by a Toyota Landcruiser.
They say surging fuel costs have well and truly blown their budget. On their last trip last year, they paid an average of $2 per litre for diesel but, this time around, it’s more like $2.97.
“Our approach has always been we can’t do much about the cost, so we just have to pay it,” said Graeme. “Our concern has always been more about the availability, which to date has not been an issue … and to compensate we’re cutting back on a few other expenses such as eating out.”
The couple will soon be heading up the WA coast … and see plenty of reasons – besides their own enjoyment – not to change their plans.
“We have booked in advance a number of sites and some tours in the Pilbara and Kimberley, so we’re hesitant to not proceed,” said Graeme. “Plus, there will be a number of tour operators up that way who may see cancellations and they need support as well, especially Exmouth recovering from Cyclone.”
