Alice Springs Town Council has renewed its efforts to win Commonwealth funding to seal the 2,800 kilometre Outback Way that runs through Central Australia. The road links Laverton in Western Australia with Winton in Queensland, and provides access to Uluru and the Olgas in the Red Centre.
Alice Springs Mayor Damien Ryan says it will be at least 10 years before the iconic Outback route is fully sealed. However, he told the ABC, that the council has been encouraged by the response to its latest efforts to attract the estimated half-a-billion dollars needed for the project.
“We received a very strong response from all concerned, better than we’ve had in previous times,” he said. “We have spent a lot of time promoting this road and a lot more decision-makers in Canberra are starting to see the benefits that it can bring.”
