Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain area could soon be hosting a new campsite and a tourist fishing facility.
A proposal has been put forward to create six spaces for caravans and campervans, and an additional nine unpowered tent sites, on Cradle Mountain Rd in Moina, about 28 kilometres south west of Sheffield
The pan would also see two dams stocked with fish for the tourist operation, as well as a food van, barbecue facilities, and boardwalks and walking trails.
The Advertiser newspaper reports that the property will be registered as a private fishery with the issuing of licences for catch and keep or catch and release fishing, as well as target casting onto floating targets.
The Kentish Council is considering the development application, which comes with a number of recommendations including that there be no further removal of vegetation other that what is in the approved plans and a rechargeable drinking water system with a storage capacity of not less than 10,000 litres be provided.
The Advertiser reports that there has been one representation made following public exhibition of the proposal. It raises a several concerns including those of noise, potential fire dangers due to campfires and the potential for trespassing onto the neighbouring property.
Six spaces for caravans is grossly inadequate – there needs to be sufficient overnight parking spaces for 20 -50 vans.
That will NEVER happen … far too invasive, and destructive of the pristine environment there. FWIW, the Cradle Mt area is the kick-off for the Overland Track walk, and people would need to be able to return to collect their vans if they were intending to do the track. Far better to concentrate on the walk, than the van sites.
This proposal seems to be about vaning and camping to go fishing not walking.
Fully agree. 6 spaces? That’s better than nothing but still only a token gesture. ‘Wonder what tourism means to Tasmania? Not much by the
sounds of this.
Have you been to Cradle Mountain recently? No, obviously from your comment. There already is a massive car park at the Visitor’s Centre. There is a large Caravan Park across the road from the Visitor’s Centre with cabins, caravan and tent spaces. The proposed new caravan/camping area is located some distance from the Visitor’s Centre and would presumably be an overflow area, or specifically for those gigantic rigs that could not negotiate the narrow winding roads of the National Park. Do your research to make a helpful comment. It would be a rare Grey Nomad who should attempt the Overland Trail. We were there Dec. 2019 and 3 ill-equipped and unprepared individuals had to be rescued and medi-evacuated to Hobart by helicopter. They almost died. The weather changes dramatically and quickly in that region.
I guess that means you have to book 2 years in advance to get a caravan spot.. 6 is really not enough to cater for tourism..
With any of these proposals, details of nearest dump points should be included. Too many spots spoilt with careless emptying of black water.
This is a great idea. There is a wonderful caravan park in the area but this would be a spot to leave the van while doing a day trip to the park.
