4WD towing caravan in freak city centre crash

Published: February 25, 2018

A four-wheel-drive towing a caravan has rolled onto its side and crashed through temporary fencing after a collision in the centre of the Victorian city of Bendigo this morning.

According to a report in the Bendigo Advertiser, the accident happened when a 17-year-old male learner driver failed to give way as he was attempting to turn right. His vehicle then collided with the side of the four-wheel-drive which went crashing through fencing in front of the Bendigo TAFE city campus.

The 4WD rolled onto its side and the caravan careered into the fencing. The 4WD sustained severe damage but both occupants of the vehicle escaped unhurt. All occupants were also out of the vehicles when emergency services arrived.

The learner driver’s car sustained extensive damage to its front.

Leading Senior Constable Steve Bice said the crash created a number of traffic issues for people heading through central Bendigo.

“A penalty notice will be issued to the driver who failed to give way,” he told the Bendigo Advertiser.

All vehicles were towed from the scene and traffic was restricted for more than an hour.

One would hope the fully licenced driver in the vehicle with the learner driver will also be issued with an infringement notice as well given that that person was instructing the learner and therefore the responsible party. You would think they told the learner NOT to try and turn to beat the oncoming caravan & vehicle through the intersection.

Lets just remember that the other driver was a learner – we have all been there once.

17 year old need to experience towing at an early age to realise you can not stop on a pin when towing

If you read the report carefully, the 17 year old was driving thevother car, not the 4wd

I feel for the learner driver, they probably won’t want to get behind the wheel again. We all make mistakes in judgement, even more experienced drivers, it was lucky no one was hurt.

So sad for all concerned. The Learner driver was not towing the van however he was at fault according to the report. Accidents do happen and we never know when we are going to be in one. Luckily no one was severely hurt.

This is to
David , Ricky and Allen. The person to whom you replied never said that the 17yr old was driving the 4wd , just that if he had experience towing a heavy caravan then he would understand how difficult it is to stop a vehicle suddenly when towing.
You guys should read more carefully.
