It’s perhaps the ultimate grey nomad nightmare. Normally, when you’re driving your monster rig across a railway crossing and your vehicle stalls just as you hear a speeding train hurtling towards you …. you wake up, and it’s all okay. But, for one traumatized motorhomer in the US, the scenario was all too real.
The drama played out in Berkley, California. Local police say it appears the RV stalled on the track, with the driver able to jump out just before a northbound Amtrak train struck the vehicle. However, the force of the collision spun the RV around and the driver was struck by flying debris. The male driver was rushed to hospital with what are described as ‘serious’ injuries. The Berkleyside newspaper reports that he is currently in a stable condition.
Rail operator, Union Pacific, has apparently already had to respond to Berkeley at least twice this year for serious collisions involving trains.
