Dingo attacks and injures five-year-old-boy at Fraser Island campsite

Published: December 19, 2022

A dingo has attacked a five-year-old at a campsite on Queensland’s Fraser Island.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the boy was bitten on his arms and legs at the Ocean Lake Camp Ground on the northern end of the island yesterday.

“He has multiple bites to his arms and around the back of his legs,” the spokesperson said. “They don’t appear to be overly serious, but they haven’t provided a full report at this stage.”

The Brisbane Times reports that the boy was set to be airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital.

The newspaper reports that there have been a number of dingo attacks on the island overs the years, but the death of a nine-year-old two decades ago that was the catalyst for changes in the way the wild dogs are managed.

Clinton Gage was attacked and killed by two dingoes near Waddy Point in 2001, leading first to a dingo cull, and eventually to a new dingo management strategy in 2013.

The Brisbane Times reports that there are now around 200 dingoes on Fraser Island.

Dingoes are no longer culled on the island and high-risk dogs are now shifted away from tourism hotspots.

I’ve only been there once and saw people feeding them
STOP FEEDING THEM THERE WILD ANNIMALS
I fear the damage has even done now and learned behaviour has taught them humans are a food source
