The Queensland city of Rockhampton is determined to continue to attract more grey nomads and other travellers … and it’s investing in infrastructure in a bid to do so.
A new RV dump point has just opened at the Heritage Village, allowing caravan and RV travellers to stop off the highway at a location close to shops, fuel stations and tourist attractions.
Rockhampton Regional Council says the new Heritage Village facilities have replaced the old dump point at Nuttall Street, which had become outdated and required constant repair.
There will be an overlap of a few weeks between the opening of the new Heritage Village facility and the closure of the Nuttall Street site to ensure a smooth transition for users.

The council hopes that enhancing amenities for travellers will encourage longer stays in the region and improve the overall visitor experience at the Heritage Village, and strengthen Rockhampton’s appeal as a welcoming stop for road travellers.
Mayor, Tony Williams, said the city was seeing a growing number of RV travellers visiting, especially in the cooler months.
“This new facility supports those travelling through, providing a modern, safe and hygienic solution while also helping to protect our environment and reduce illegal dumping,” he said. “A lot of the people visiting Rockhampton come from that drive market so it’s important we have the right infrastructure so they can stop, stay and explore our region.”
Tourism Coordinator, Lauren Law, said having appropriate infrastructure was critical in persuading travellers to come and stop.
“By providing a necessary tool that they need for their travels and by aligning with our local tourism attractions we’re also getting them to come and explore places they may not have seen if they were going elsewhere,” she said.
The council says Caravan Industry Association figures show caravanners spend $12.6 billion across Australia every year, and the new dump point is critical to ensuring that travellers choose to stop, stay and explore in Rockhampton.

Not so much town but I do like to know what facilities like DP or WP are in the area so I can plan accordingly
We have just been to Rockhampton and used the new dump point behind the information Centre. It is easy to access with a van, is close to everything, there are toilets there and a flush hose and a nearby service station. Top Marks Rocky Council.
Well done Rocky! If only more councils took this attitude to travellers we would all be better off.
Not so much. But we do check out where the DP and water is located and trying to find a bin is often difficult especially with a can in behind.
But what councils need to think about is parking for long vehicle often they are so far from supermarkets we don’t stop in that town and unless you are in WA the next town is about an hour away. So many are missing out on a few hundred dollars.
Winton qld do it well big parking area and we often unhitch for the day and tour around the area as well as shop fuel up etc
That’s the best thing about a composting toilet! Free from having anxiety about where to find a dump point.
Fantastic we stay and travel through Rockhampton regularly on our trips south.
I would like to see all councils up the coast of Queensland take a leaf out of Childers book and have a set up for caravaners to use dump points and water tank fill points .

Unless the picture is of a different dump point I would have thought the council would have fitted one of the new elevated dump stations so people don’t have to bend over with the heavy cannister.
I have never understood why the old style as in the picture were placed at ground level and not lifted up on a concrete platform.
For those Caravans and Motorhomes that have built in Black Water and Grey Water tanks. Sh*t and water don’t run uphill.
The newer elevated dump points have both, ground level and elevated disposal points. The trend is towards Composting or Separation toilets.
