Country NSW town to get brand new caravan park

Published: May 6, 2022

The New South Wales country town of Dungog is set to get a brand new caravan park, and a primitive camping site.

It is something of a turnaround in that back in 2014, a report concluded that it wasn’t feasible for another caravan park to be established in the area. A number of approved caravan / camping sites are currently operating within the Dungog Shire, including Williams River Holiday Park in Clarence Town.

However, times have changed and the small town – located on the Williams River in the Hunter region – is hoping the new facilities will prove a boon for tourism.

Dungog mayor John Connors is certainly optimistic.

“This is something that the community has been agitating for, for many, many years,” he told the Dungog Chronicle. “It’s accepted that things have changed since 2014 … I was getting repeated requests that we should be doing something about a caravan park.”

The council has now approved a plan to build a new caravan park at an address on Abelard Street, Dungog, as well as a primitive camping area at Abbotts Farm.

Marion Stuart, the president of the Dungog District Chamber of Commerce, said it was great to see the council-owned land being used … and she was convinced the park would open up Dungog for tourists and help attract more events.

She told the Dungog Chronicle that more money being spent on advertising the caravan park would also mean that more people are in and around town, causing a flow-on effect throughout.

“They have a lot more advertising dollars than what we have,” Ms Stuart told the Chronicle. “Whatever they’re advertising overflows into all the other smaller places and other businesses … it’s a win-win situation.”

Dungog has a population of around 2,000 and is popular destination for cyclists, as well as hosting a number of popular events including the Dungog Film Festival, the Dungog Agricultural Show, Pedalfest, the Dungog Rodeo, and the Thunderbolt Rally.
