The NSW town of Dungog is the latest rural community to begin investigating the possibility of setting up a short-term free camping option for travellers.
At its recent meeting, Dungog Shire Council received a 24-hour caravan and RV parking site assessment report.
This was in response to a Motion of Notice submitted by Deputy Mayor Liam Ley a few months ago.
“It’s something that I’ve been advocating for over the past year, and there’s still a little bit more work to do,” he said in a video statement. “But it’s another important step forward to providing safe overnight options for visitors.”

Mr Ley said a few key sites had been identified that might be suitable for additional 24-hour camping.
“Supporting RV tourism means supporting our local cafes, pubs, our shops, and small businesses in general,” he said. “And by increasing travellers’ time in the shire, we are encouraging them to spend more money in our communities rather than just driving through.”
Dungog Shire, which is situated adjacent to the Barrington Tops in rugged country, already has a number of budget camping options for grey nomads and other travellers, including 16 powered sites at the Dungog Showground.

Dung of would be a good town to stay and visit BUT 24hrs is not enough to be able to look around and spend money in the town e.g. visiting Cafes, shops, pubs etc plus looking around the area. At least 2 days or 3 would be the minimum in my books. The longer Grey Nomads stay, more likely more money will be spent.
Then simply head off to the low price showgrounds as advised in this article
Yes I agree 48or72 seems a better in my view, I think the town would do well by it ,been there great little spot handy to a lot of local areas including Newcastle which seems to won’t traveller’s to stay at high priced caravan accommodation ,stayed at Gloucester show grounds for a few days also a good spot ,not far along,from Dungog.
We stayed at dungog showground for a week paid $20 a night at the RSL hard to find a level site had horse poo everywhere and it would have been great if they cut the grass regularly. Had a nice meal at the RSL ,was told that the council was closing the showgrounds.
Don’t bother unless it is 48 hours, especially for out of the way towns like Dungog.
We would certainly welcome (48/72hrs)it,we always support the towns,top up fuel tanks ect We had a terrifying experience yesterday afternoon,camped on our own,
at Round Hill Broken Hill free camp ,with 2 Crack heads with drones and a qoad bike.Frightening the life out of us,doing donuts ,covering us in red dust,and flying the drone right up to windows of our motorhome,we have never experienced anything like this in 35yrs of motor homing,More towns should encourage Rv for the Travellers,it brings alot more dollars to the towns and much saver for the Travellers.
