Easter road toll down as nomads escape van flip

Published: April 23, 2014

It’s one of the busiest – and often one of the most deadly – times of the year on the road and most grey nomads prefer not to travel too far during the Easter holidays.

Although the road toll was down this year, with 10 fewer deaths than in 2013, 12 people still died on Australia’s roads between April 17 and April 21.

Five people died in Western Australia, three in Queensland, and two in New South Wales. Tasmania and Victoria each had one death.

It is not believed any grey nomads were among the fatalities although two certainly had a lucky escape when their car and caravan flipped on the Sturt Highway east of Wagga in New South Wales. The single-vehicle accident happened on a straight stretch of road.

A 65-year-old man and 63-year-old woman were treated on the scene for minor injuries to their hands and taken to Wagga Base Hospital. Spinal precautions were also taken on the woman.

Do you avoid travel during the Easter break? What other times do you decide to stay off the roads? Comment below.

I never travel at Easter Or Christmas far to busy and dangerous, I prefer to stay wherever I am.

I agree with Clarke. Have stayed home for the Easter Xmas breaks for many many years. Avoid school holiday periods as well. Too many people travelling too far in too short a time to be safe.

As above. Avoid school holidays full stop. Easter, Christmas and all in-between. Stay put.

I bought a bush block in Victoria just so I can have a place to ‘hide’ when all holidays are on……Easter, Xmas, School Holidays, Long weekends……anytime the novices come out of the proverbial office woodwork, and clamber on to the roads with their vans, tents and kids! They think they own the roads AND the campsites with no regard to anyone else but themselves…………AND leave their mess for us to pick up……..no thanks. I’m sick of it!
