Vote early … and then get back to living the dream!

The Federal Election may still be more than a week away but many grey nomads travelling in remote Australia have already made the effort to cast their ballots.

At some early voting centres in places popular with caravanners and motorhomers such as Broome, long queues were initially reported as unexpectedly large numbers of travellers arrived to perform their democratic duties.

The ABC reports that Dianne Marriott from New South Wales drove 120 kilometres from Barn Hill to cast her vote at one one of two early voting centres in Broome.

“We did hear horrific stories about yesterday … my neighbours in the caravan park said it took them nearly two hours,” she said.

Officials say the initial rush when the polling station opened earlier this week has died down.

Pamela and Trevor Granger from Cairns were another couple  who cast their vote in  Broome because they couldn’t be sure where they would be on July 2.

“I think a lot of grey nomads are like that,” Ms Granger told the ABC. “They do not have a fixed itinerary …  get it in, get it over and done with.”

Australian Electoral Officer and State Manager of the Western Australian Electoral Commission, Marie Neilson with the said there were plenty of options for people who were voting outside of their electorate.

“Pre-poll voting centres and remote mobile polling teams provide the capacity for people to vote anywhere in Australia,” she told the ABC.

Applications for postal votes close at 6pm on Wednesday, June 29, but the AEC recommends people apply as soon as possible
