Another caravan park installs solar system in bid to reduce energy costs

Published: July 26, 2024

A growing number of caravan parks are embracing solar systems as a way of reducing energy costs.

In the latest example, a 39kW solar system has recently been installed at Southcombe Lodge in Southcombe Caravan Park located in the south-west Victorian town of Port Fairy.

Moyne Shire Council says the system, which features 90 panels, will generate a significant portion of the lodge’s electricity requirements during the warmer months and, even in winter, will reduce reliance on the power grid.

Mayor, Cr Ian Smith said the system will make a big dent in the electricity usage for the caravan park, the second highest electricity user of all of council’s sites.

“It’s estimated that the renewable energy system will reduce both costs and emissions at the site by 35%,” said Cr Smith. “Generating clean electricity for our popular visitor facilities contributes even further to the Moyne Shire environment and the wellbeing of our community.”

He said sustainable energy projects like the one at the van park would have a positive impact well into the future.

This installation follows four other systems that have been installed at council-run facilities across the shire.

  • Do you expect van parks which manage to reduce power costs with solar systems will pass on the savings and lower fees for guests?

Of course not. Just like any other business, e.g.accommodation, retail, tourism, hospitality doesn’t.

Exactly. They have to get their money back first
It’s unreasonable to expect anything before then.

A difficult one to answer, I would like to say yes to passing on benefits but maybe they’ll improve park in other areas. I feel for CP’s, I’ve watched people turn van air con on at 7am, go out for the day then return and sit outside. It’s mindless. One can only hour about the benefits only after they pay off the solar install.

Of course not. They’ll increase the fees to pay for the solar system.

If anything they will increase the rate and tell you that now they have to pay for the system..no win for nomads

It surprises me with the amount of money caravan parks charge to stay at their sites that more caravan parks should look at having solar installed. Maybe then the rate to stay can be reduced to a a more realistic price.

If EV cars eventually get good enough to pull caravans, all the solar power and more will be spent on charging EVs. So no decrease in costs.

This is a great initiative by the Council, good on them. The biggest problem the world faces is Climate Change and anything which reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is a good thing.
Our house has 22kW of solar and 22kWhr of battery storage, we can go off-grid at anytime but we share our excess power through the grid with our locals.
We also have an EV so, when we are at home it is charged totally by solar and we tow our van with it as well.
