Man killed and woman seriously injured in highway caravan crash

Published: May 16, 2025

A male caravanner has died and his female passenger seriously injured in a horror crash on Queensland’s Bruce Highway.

The police Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the accident which happened near Nirimba on the Sunshine Coast yesterday morning.

Police say they responded to reports that a Mazda ute towing a caravan had veered across multiple lanes, collided with a Toyota ute, before going down an embankment on the northbound lanes of the highway, between Roys Road and the Caloundra interchange.

The driver of the Mazda with the caravan, a man in his 80s, died at the scene.

The passenger, a woman in her 60s, was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the Toyota was not physically injured.

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident are urged to contact police.

Bruce strikes again !!! This “highway” has earned a high level of notoriety over the last few decades possibly due to poor maintenance and forward planning by successive Qld. governments.

Not sure the highway or road surface was responsible for this tragedy (or for many others). Regularly travel from south-east to Central Queensland and biggest concern is the performance of other drivers rather than the road. Realise the highway has become a whipping boy but if you drive to suit the conditions you should not have too many worries; except for the unexpected activities of other drivers.

As a Queenslander for 79 years we no longer travel in Qld. We travel for about 3 months in the spring and another 3 months after winter and can’t wait to cross the border because of the poor condition of the roads. We can no longer justify the repairs after each Qld trip just to say we support Qld tourism. Fix the roads and we will spend more of our dollars at tourist places in our home state.

Here we go again. This section of the highway is dual lanes both sides – hardly the fault of the road. The initial cause has not been stated.

How many more folk have to lose their lives on the Bruce Goat Track before politicians, who bleat before an election that they will fix the Bruce; then fall silent after they get into Parliament?

The Bruce Highway never has killed anybody,
Ignoring the remote chances of mechanical failure, the most likely cause of any accident is a mistake by a driver.
How anybody can say that any accident can be the fault of the road is beyond me.
In WA I drive a 130 ton Roadtrain on roads that do indeed resemble a goat track, but it’s the old story of “Drive to the conditions”.
High speed, van too heavy for the car, or poorly loaded van, are more likely causes.

Completely agree with you, many people do not drive to conditions, thus accidents happen. It’s not the road, rarely, it’s bad driving, like tailgating, weaving in and out on the Bruce at 120klm a, not slowing down in heavy storms etc and just plain driving too fast!

Hmmm. Everyone blaming the road without knowing the facts! This part is a dual lane highway – how good does a road need to be!
Surprised there’s no mandatory towing course comments yet. Commiserations to the familes involved.

I must be missing something here. Why is it always the roads fault when there is an accident?

A vehicle crosses multiple lanes. I ask simple questions.

Is it the fault of the driver? Maybe.
Is it the fault of the vehicle? Maybe.
Is it the fault of the road? Maybe not.

Many drivers just do not drive to the conditions. Not all roads are good. I get that part. But that does not mean you still drive at the speed limit or close to it. Better to get abused than cremated.

Just my opinion.
