Police say driver error may have been responsible for the crash that killed a grey nomad couple in central Victoria.
The man and woman, aged in their 80s, died when their motorhome collided with a truck on the Wimmera Highway at Moliagul, west of Bendigo. The pair was from New South Wales.
Ambulance Victoria John Mullen said the truck driver escaped injury but was treated for shock.
Bendigo Senior Sergeant Paul Gardiner said the motorhome had somehow moved in front of the truck colliding with the rear of the large vehicle.
“The truck had some earth moving equipment on the back of it,” he told the Age newspaper. “As it has got to the intersection the campervan or motorhome for some reason has moved in front of the truck, it has collided with the rear of the truck which caused the motorhome to overturn. Unfortunately the male and female of that motorhome are deceased.”
Police took statements from a number of witnesses at the scene including the truck driver.
“The truck driver did slow down, he moved to the other side of the road to avoid the motorhome but unfortunately the motorhome has hit the rear-end of the truck,” said Sergeant Gardiner.
It seems that cars travelling behind the incident knew the elderly couple.
Sergeant Gardiner said people had to take care on country roads.
“We want people to take care and we want people to make sure that they are here with us at Christmas time,” he said.
