A 70-year-old caravanner has been killed after a collision with a semi-trailer on the Warrego Highway, about 40 kilometres east of Charleville.
The sole passenger, a 72-year-old woman, was transported to the Charleville base Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 64-year-old man, was taken to hospital suffering shock.
Police say preliminary investigations suggest that a utility towing a caravan attempted to turn across the Warrego Highway to access a rest stop on the side of the road when a semi-trailer collided with it.
The 70-year-old Ute driver died at the scene.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the accident, which took place yesterday afternoon.
The Warrego Highway was closed for approximately two hours in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Such a sad story. This terrible accident highlights the need for more rest areas on both sides of the road. We have driven for. Ore kms than we wanted because there was no where safe to stop and/or no rest areas.
What about watch where your turning
We have also travelled more kms than we wanted to because of a lack of suitable rest areas mostly in Queensland. We see Dozy Divers Die a lot, but there is no where to stop.
Sorry but I do not agree with the cry “not enough rest areas”. Plan your trip/day before departing. Know where you are going to stop. It may be a short day or a long day, but at least you are prepared. There are plenty of rest stops in Qld. You just have to open your eyes
At least in NSW and on some of the newer highways in QLD there seems to be more rest areas. Just taking a while for the Sunshine State to catch up…meanwhile drivers die. Of course, the elephant in the room is this – why did the gent turn in front of the truck? Was the road wide enough? Did he have traffic screaming up behind him? Was it a simple error of judgment?
Did he turn in front of the truck or did the truck come up behind him because I have nearly been hit before by the truck coming from behind even with my blinkers on they just don’t see
