A male caravanner has died and his female passenger remains in critical condition after their four-wheel-drive towing a van rolled on the M5 on the south-west outskirts of Sydney.
The southbound vehicles reportedly jack-knifed and then rolled at Woodbine, near Campbelltown, at about 3pm today.
The two occupants were both trapped in the wreckage for some time.
New South Wales police later confirmed the male driver had died at the scene.
The female passenger was treated at the scene before being flown to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.
A spokeswoman for Liverpool Hospital said the woman’s condition is now stable.
Officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command are on the scene investigating.
Massive tailbacks are being reported following the crash.
OMG what is going on in the caravanning world? Almost daily now we hear the news of another caravan accident. It is with great sadness I read this story and my heartfelt condolences go out to all the families and friends of these intrepid travellers. Take care everyone!
It sadden us all when these fatal accidents occur. Hopethe lady recovers. I read somewhere that it is estimated that there are 150000 caravans on the road during peak RV periods.
so as a % this would equate to a very small amount as against deaths and other vehicle accidents.
It is something I consider everytime we leave home. But !!!! that’s life.
I keep our speed down to 80 – 90 kph as a precausion against a similar instance such as this not happening.
Happy trails and safe travels
RIP so sad
At present caravan towing training businesses charge an exorbitant $1000 per training. It needs to be mandatory over a certain towing weight and government run.
Make it mandatory but not retrospective and govt’s need to ensure the prices are competitive. The problem is that many people now towing large caravans with large 4×4’s have never driven anything larger than a holden commodore and never towed anything previously
RIP
How do we travel from the Riverina to the big red bash with 3 caravansand 3 camper trailers preferred on sealed roads. Where are the safest places to stay
Carol. Best you buy yourself a good map book , marking sealed/non sealed roads. There is a bit of sealed road not far from big red. It is the main street of Birdsville. The average well maintained vehicles and vans can do the B/Ville track. Couple of extra tyres and spares.Done it 5 times no probs .Safety in Numbers. ? Live a little!
Tow connections need to be looked at if your van rolls it takes your vechile with because of chain connections, anti sway bars, load levellers all tying the van and rig together we now have esc, breakaway cables, as safety aids but the rig still rolls. Tow ball connection only would snap as van rolled and rig should in most cases remain upright
