The grey nomad community is in mourning after police confirmed that a caravanning couple in their mid 60s died in a crash on the Cobb Highway near Wanganella in New South Wales, 120 kilometres north of the Victorian border.
The couple who are believed to be from Broadford in Victoria were travelling north in a Mitsubishi Triton ute towing a caravan when tragedy struck late last week. While investigations are ongoing, police say it appears the ute may have veered into the path of the B-double carrying cattle as it tried to overtake. The ute then became entangled under the truck.
The 27-year-old driver of the B-double was not injured in the crash but underwent mandatory testing.

While accidents involving caravans have become all too common in recent years, the majority miraculously seem to end with stories of lucky escapes or relatively minor injuries.
News then of a double fatality will send shockwaves through the caravanning world, and serve once again as a terrifying reminder of the need to take incredible care out on the roads. As this horrific accident once again proves, the difference between living the dream and the ultimate nightmare can be one split second decision, one piece of bad luck, one unexpected distraction.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
