Fisherman taken by saltie as his wife watches on

Published: August 19, 2014

A 57-year-old man who went into Adelaide River near Darwin to unsnag his fishing line has been taken by a crocodile.

The man’s wife was on the river bank at the time.

“The initial information is that she did not see him taken but heard a scream and then turned around and saw a (crocodile) tail splashing in the water,” said Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Jo Foley. “She is absolutely distraught.”

After the woman raised the alarm, police and wildlife officers carried out a search of the river, and shot a 4.5-metre crocodile a few hours later. The man’s body was recovered late last night.

The Adelaide River is well known for its large crocodiles and many tourists go on cruises specifically to see them. There are crocodile warning signs in the area.

This latest incident happened near the Adelaide River bridge on the Arnhem Highway.

The ABC reports there have been a number of crocodile attacks in NT this year. These include:

  • January: A 12-year-old boy attacked and killed at a billabong at Cooinda in Kakadu
  • June: Fisherman Bill Scott, 62, taken from a boat in Kakadu
  • August: Biological remains found in a crocodile after a man goes missing on Melville Island in a suspected attack
  • August: Man fishing on Adelaide River taken in front of wife

We went on the Jumping Croc cruise last week and saw the rare yellow croc ‘Michael Jackson. He has lived near the bridge above the feeding line for years. There are warning signs everywhere. So sad.

Albeit my thoughts and prayers are with the family, I wonder the value of fishing in the Adelaide river … from the bank?? Me thinks my fishing in NT and tropical QLD will be “a piece of flake and 4 potato cakes” kind of fishin’
