Flinders Ranges for grey nomads
The fabulous Flinders is often portrayed as the gateway to the Outback

While everyone had different preferences when it comes to travel destinations, it’s always interesting to hear what other people’s favourite spots are.

A recent poll of RAA members has shed some light on what they at least consider to be the best places to visit in South Australia. The RAA said the Flinders Ranges had been selected by most as the state’s top location.

The Advertiser newspaper reports that the vast Outback region, with its majestic landscapes, was closely followed by the three peninsulas with their beach getaways – the Fleurieu, Yorke and Eyre peninsulas. The Barossa Valley rounded out the top five.

RAA Travel general manager Gina Norman said the winner really came as no surprise.

“The Flinders Ranges is popular for those who want to get away to a region which offers an experience for everyone, including the spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and outdoor activities such as hiking,’’ she said. “Flinders also offers something for every budget from Outback camping to resorts.”

She said the Fleurieu Peninsula had long been popular because if its beachside location, but the development of the food and wine industry in the past 10 years had lifted its visitor appeal to anew level. She said it now offered world class eating and drinking experiences with great restaurants, wineries, cheese makers and craft beers.

RAA’s travel survey showed self-drive holidays were the most popular for domestic destinations and, with falling oil prices, holidaymakers in South Australia should see some cheaper petrol prices compared to this time last year.

The Advertiser reports that the RAA said Adelaide’s unleaded petrol prices last December averaged 137c a litre. However, with wholesale prices falling as low as 115c this month, it says motorists should be able to fill up for less than the same period last year if they time the price cycle right.
