Large caravan flips, causing traffic chaos on Princes Freeway

Published: January 18, 2022

A large caravan has flipped is on its side on the busy Princes Freeway near Melbourne.

Local media is reporting the rig went over on the out-bound lanes just before the Point Cook Road exit.

Witness Wayne told Neil Mitchell on 3AW that the van unhitched from the ute towing it.

“The trailer hit the ute and spun around into the wall,” he said.

Chris Miller from the Department of Transport told the radio station that a crane will be needed to get the caravan upright.

All three outbound lanes were closed.

“The disruption is probably likely to go for an hour or two,” he said. “Delays are likely to get pretty lengthy, I’d suggest.”

It is not believed that anyone was hurt in the frightening accident.

All the more reason to have a licence to tow caravans. Not a car licence.

Towing licence won’t fix common sense.

Is that why there are no car and truck accidents, because there are car and truck licences?

Glad no-one hurt.
Looks like a new van, same as one behind. Do these vehicles have towing mirrors??

Dealer or Manufacturer delivering vans to the Geelong caravan and camping show on this weekend.
One less van on show.
Someone will have some explaining to do.

Can anybody identify the tow vehicles? They look a bit light to me.

I don’t believe the van became unhitched, look at the photo, traveling in convoy, too much stuff in the van rear, tug too light. !!!!! semi or another car changed lanes, how many reasons are there.

Looks like a Ford Ranger or a Colorado tow vehicle. If I zoom in a bit looks like tow mirrors are fitted. All the expert comments again from people that weren’t there again & yep towing courses and a caravan license should solve all the issues that go with caravans has raised its head again nothing to do with the way it was hooked up & why the chains didn’t catch the draw bar ??

I have just had my van and car weighed professionally onsite in preparation for an extended trip. Previously, I have used a “DIY” public weighbridge. These two are like chalk and cheese. The weighbridge does give the basics ,but the onsite weigh gives so much more information , a comprehensive printed report and a solution if there is a problem. The cost is $350 .( I am not sure if I can name the company which is Weighstation -if not please remove from my post)
