Two grey nomads have been seriously injured after their car and caravan were apparently forced off the road by another driver before bursting into flames.
The 73-year-old man and 71-year-old woman were airlifted to hospital following the dramatic incident which happened this morning near Mansfield in country Victoria.
Investigators believe a black Toyota LandCruiser towing a bright green ski boat on a black trailer overtook the couple’s silver Subaru Forester towing a Scenic Galaxy caravan on Mansfield-Woods Point Road. It is believed the caravanners were forced off the road and their car and caravan then burst into flames.
Reports suggest the Toyota Land Cruiser overtook up to eight cars prior to this incident.
Police are yet to locate the driver of that car.
Local farmer Scott Purcell told 9News that he saw the flames and rushed to help on his quad bike.
“We saw one fella laying on the ground and we just thought that one fella was obviously pretty badly injured … so we dragged him across the road and sorta sheltered him behind the four wheeler so he was away from the fire,” he said “We saw gas bottles on the caravan,.
The crash scene exploded shortly after.
“It was like a big flame thrower, it was pretty hectic,” Mr Purcell told 9 News.
Investigators are appealing to the occupants of these cars or anyone with dashcam footage or any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
I do hope they are ok. It’s every caravanners worst nightmare.
Another darn fool on the road. Hope they get caught and jailed.
I.d like to see an update to this story when the idiot is caught
Our thoughts are with you both for a good recovery.
37 year old hands himself into police no charges as yet
I had a caravan over take me doing a right hand turn, having to brake to avoid a collision.
Why is it never the bloody dangerous idiot who crashes?
Always the innocent who just happens to share the road with these idiots?
