An independent contractor is to review the Fraser Island Dingo Management Strategy. The decision follows a number of serious attacks this year on the island, off south-east Queensland, including five over in a fortnight in March.
Queensland’s Environment Minister, Andrew Powell, says it is important the review comes from an independent scientific source and the process is thorough.
“We intend to have this completed as quickly as possible but we do want to make sure EcoSure is consulting widely and seeking submissions from as far afield as possible regarding management of wild dogs, particularly dingoes, on Fraser Island,” he told the ABC. “We felt it was important to have an independent peer review on the strategy, that it was timely and that it would produce the best scientific outcome for the ongoing management for dingoes on Fraser Island.”
The contractor is expected to hand down a draft report later this year.
