Grey nomads hit a ‘holiday in one’ as new RV park opens at golf course

Published: April 29, 2022

A Far North Queensland Golf Club will begin welcoming grey nomads next week as a new RV park opens next to the course.

The Mossman Golf club has long campaigned to be allowed to host recreational vehicles …  and now it’s happening.

Club spokesman and captain John Carney told the Cairns Post that 18 unpowered sites would run the length of the fairway at the back of the course and were ‘ready to go’.

“We have tried to get this through council for eight years,” he said. “Mayor Michael Kerr has been behind it 100% since day one, we have had a few hiccups along the way but we have got over them and it looks like we’ll be opening within about a week to 10 days.”

Douglas Shire Council has offered reduced fees and payments to get the new venture off the ground, approving a deferred payment proposal for the golf club, situated 20 minutes north of Port Douglas.

The Cairns Post reports that public toilets have been upgraded and an $8000 net installed to stop errant golf balls from hitting RVs.

Grey nomad membershipMr Carney said they hoped to attract keen golfers.

“Our real objective is to get people that want to play golf, we’ll be doing discounted rates for them,” he said. “They can stay for seven nights and play golf for four days, and they can use the facilities at the club house, bar and golf course.”

It comes after a council run RV park concept was rejected at a council meeting in January, with a majority of councillors voting against it.

Mayor Michael Kerr said the golf club concept ‘is a good result’ and council was happy to support it.

“This is just a community organisation doing an RV Park on the land that they are already leasing from council,” he told the Cairns Post. “What they are doing is specifically aimed at those RV owners who absolutely want an RV place and they might want to stop there for a couple of days and have some rounds of golf.”

Sites will range from $22-$25 a night.

We are avid golfers and live on a golf course in southern NSW. We have played at Mossman before and rate it always in good condition just find if we are going to stay for say 7 nights and pay green fees and comp fees $ 22-25 for an UNPOWERED SITE no mention of water and waste makes it a bit pricey and would end up being well over a $100 a day with golf etc.for two adults and comp fees.BUT LOVE THE IDEA OF MORE OPTIONS TO STAY AND PLAY AT GOLF COURSES
