Grey nomads help Australia rule the caravanning world

The caravanning way of life is alive and well and living Down Under!

The recently released Global Caravanning Profile, revealed Australia to be the third strongest caravan market in the world with 21,500 new caravan registrations. According to this report, the global caravan market experienced growth of 4.9% in 2012 to total to a total of 318,910 units
(caravans only).

North America, with 212,900 new RV registrations and Europe with 81,010 new registrations are the leading caravan markets on an annual basis but their populations dwarf ours … making us the unofficial caravanning kings.

The Caravan, RV & Accommodation Industry of Australia (CRVA) says the Australian RV market has proved itself to be extremely resilient and hasn’t been as deeply impacted by the recession as other parts of the world.

“Between 2008 and 2011, caravan and campervan registrations rose by 14.7% across Australia,” said Stuart Lamont, the CRVA’s Chief Executive Officer. “There are now over 474,000 registered RV products throughout Australia.”

Australian Facts (courtesy of CRVA):

• Australians spent 67.8 million nights in campgrounds last year, of which 45.3 million were in caravan holiday parks greater than 40 sites. Some, 90% of those camping nights were spent outside of Australia’s capital city tourism regions.

• Most of the market is driven by domestic travellers, but nearly 1 in 10 is international traveller who tour Australia by an RV. Of the international travellers, 67% come from Europe, 9%from New Zealand, 6% from the United States and 8% from Asia.

• There are 1,638 caravan holiday parks with more than 40 sites, and they supply more than 170,000 individual campsites.

• The largest industry user group is the 35-49 year olds, with equal usage amongst 25-34 and 50-64 markets.

Why do we love our caravans so much? Have you noticed more rigs on the road than ever before? Are you surprised the 35-49 year old age group is the biggest users of caravans?  Comment below
