Grey nomads in demand as dump point ‘fever’ spreads

Grey nomad slove dump point at Maitalnd
You've either got one, or you ain't!

The New South Wales town of Maitland has become the latest to recognise the economic importance of grey nomads … and is to install a new dump point to help it attract more.

The local council hopes the introduction of a free waste dump as soon as next year will see the number of caravans and motorhomes in the area boom.

At its recent meeting, Maitland City Council allocated up to $10,000 to install the dump point at Harold Gregson Reserve, near Maitland No.1 Sportsground. It also set aside $80,000 in the 2015-16 financial year to complete associated projects which include an upgrade of the existing toilet block near the skate park, a sealed parking area and a footpath linking it with the toilets and High Street. There will also be picnic tables and benches.

The Maitland Mercury reports that the facility will enable people to stay for free for up to 72 hours close to tourist attractions and services.

Cr Steve Procter, a caravan owner, told the local newspaper that he knew from his travels that demand for such facilities was growing.

“I know it will be well received through the grey nomad and caravanning fraternity,” he said.  “Maitland Regional Art Gallery and the coffee shops will greatly benefit from this.”

* Will the new dump point put Maitland on your travel plan radar?

  1. These “success” stories need to be spread amongst regional newspapers to help raise awareness and hopefully inspire other Councils into action

  2. good one. hope others follow this town

  3. The pic in the press release is an old one of a heavily used flat bottomed DumpEzy dump point. The current model has sloping panel floors to facilitate better drainage and partial self-cleaning. Build it and we will come, Maitland.

  4. I agree GP. These stories should be shared with every Council. Maitland is now on my list of ‘stop and shop’ towns 🙂

    • I agree wholeheartedly Suzanne. We try and do so whenever we hear of towns creating freedom campsites, dump points etc. Here is our latest response to Maitland Council – feel free to use it anyone:
Congratulations to your Council for allocating up to $10,000 to install a dump point at Harold Gregson Reserve and setting aside $80,000 in the 2015-16 financial year to complete associated projects, including an upgrade of the existing toilet block near the skate park, a sealed parking area and a footpath linking it with the toilets and High Street, together with picnic tables and benches.
We are Grey Nomads from Perth, WA who travel all over Aust. and appreciate such facilities which help us stay in regional towns, and of course, spend our money on fresh supplies, goodies, tours etc.
We are sure the introduction of a free waste dump next year will see the number of caravans and motorhomes visiting your area increasing.

  5. We are trying to get dump points in the Corangamite Shire, western Victoria there is none and after travelling you realise how much the tourists look for them.

  6. Maybe thats the solution..get more caravan OWNERS onto the councils. Well done Maitland.

  7. Maybe Walka Water Works at Maitland might be reopened for travellers, use to be a great place to spend a few days.
