Grey nomads warned again of severe bushfire risk

Published: November 26, 2015

The tragic news of at least two deaths in bushfires in South Australia has re-enforced yet again the need for grey nomads and all travellers to remain cautious and fully informed of the risks where they are.

The massive heatwave that has affected much of the country in recent days has raised the danger levels to extremely high.

The South Australian bushfire about 60 kilometres north of Adelaide has affected more than 100,000 hectares of land and has destroyed numerous properties, and caused numerous injuries. There have also been reports of a significant number of vehicles being burnt out along roads and highways.

The fire has affected an area that is bounded approximately by Roseworthy, Kapunda, Mallala, Owen and Riverton.

Last week, four people were killed in bushfires near Esperance. Many others – including large numbers of grey nomads – were extremely lucky to escape the blaze.

With more high temperatures expected today and strong winds also being forecast in states including South Australia and New South Wales, it is likely to be another challenging period for firefighters.
All travellers are urged to take great care and to monitor media to stay up to date with fire activity where they are.
