Grey nomads are being urged to keep their cool as temperatures surge in many parts of the country.
Heatwave warnings are in place for Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania … and caution and common sense is advised.
Heatwaves cause more deaths and illnesses than any other weather events across Australia.
Older people and those with medical conditions or who are unwell are amongst the most vulnerable.
“Seek a place to keep cool … close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day,” said the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). “If available, use fans or air conditioners to keep cool.”
The Bureau said warm conditions were extending across southern parts of the country, with low-level heatwaves expected to linger over large parts of Australia until next week.
The Guardian reports that temperatures are forecast to hit 38C in Melbourne, 35C in western Sydney, and as high as 45C in WA’s Pilbara region. The remote Pilbara town of Roebourne is tipped to hit in the mid to high 40s today.
In SA, severe conditions are expected to continue until at least early next week, with temperatures likely to reach as high as the low 40Cs.
South-east Queensland is expected to remain in the low 40s with, overnight temperatures up to the high 20s.
A severe heatwave warning is in place for the NSW south coast, including Batemans Bay. Maximum temperatures in the low to mid 30s were forecast for the state’s south-east, expected to slowly ease by the end of the week.
“Western Australia is continuing to see very hot conditions inland mostly through the central and northern part,” BoM senior meteorologist, Miriam Bradbury, told the Guardian. “Large areas of severe intensity heatwave conditions have been ongoing for a number of days with heatwave warnings continuing over the past week and likely to continue well into next week as well.”
