Most grey nomads love the year-round sunshine a cleverly planned Big Lap can deliver … but sometimes the endless summer can get too hot to handle!
Many travellers are currently sweltering as much of Australia falls into the grips of a serious heatwave. Large parts of inland New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia are facing extreme conditions with people being warned to take precautions against the searing temperatures.
Yesterday, Adelaide reached 39 degrees and Melbourne 37 degrees. Fairfax media reports that inland regions likely to have extended bouts of heat include Bourke in north-western New South Wales. The town can expect at least seven consecutive days of 40 degrees – the first occurrence at this time of year since 2009.
In Queensland’s Channel Country, the mercury is forecast to soar up to 8C above average to reach a humid 43C.
The Courier-Mail reports that this is classed as an ‘extreme heatwave’, and the Bureau of Meteorology warns the temperatures “will impact normally reliable infrastructure, such as power and transport”.
Paramedics in Queensland are said to be on standby as the temperatures soar across most of the state over the next several days. And further south, NSW Health is warning people to try to stay cool … and hydrated.
“People can be unprepared for the first heat spike of summer, so we are reminding them to take safety measures against the effects of overheating and sun exposure,” Ben Scalley, Director of Environmental Health, said in a statement. “It’s important people keep up their water intake, stay cool and avoid strenuous physical activity in the heat of the day … heat places a lot of strain on the body and can interfere with blood circulation and cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.”
