Grey nomads who have already ventured north are being warned to be ready for some seriously warm temperatures.
A severe heatwave is expected to hit the Top End in the coming days, with near-record temperatures being predicted in Darwin and Katherine. Forecasters say temperatures could be at least 4-5 degrees hotter than average.
SBS reports that heatwave conditions are also expected for parts of Queensland’s western Cape York and Western Australia’s Kimberley.
“We expect maximum temperatures across inland parts of the Top End to get up to the high 30s, possibly even getting up to 40 degrees,” Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Mark Kersemakers said. “We wouldn’t be surprised if some of those inland locations recorded their warmest-ever April day during the week.”
An El Nino which has brought low rainfall and warmer-than-normal temperatures to the Northern Territory throughout the wet season is lingering, Mr Kersemakers told SBS. And continuing drier conditions are not helping to cool things down.
“It’ll still be reasonably humid, but certainly dry in terms of rainfall amounts,” he said. * How do you decide when the best time to head north is? Comment below.
We usually head North after the April school holidays, this year 26th April, So we get to FNQ or NT mid May.
Many months ago we decided to start our big lap on April 26, after the Anzac Day long weekend. As we are leaving from Qld, a cyclone or other weather event could cause a postponement
So does this mean the Grey Nomads who live/visit northern Victoria in summer cannot cope with temperatures that can be 40 degree plus for 3 weeks at a time?
