The caravanning couple involved in a dramatic rollover on the Stuart Highway on Friday have reportedly escaped serious injury.
The man and woman were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the accident near Virginia, about 30 kilometres south of Darwin.
The pair’s Land Rover Discovery and caravan were destroyed when they crashed into a median drainage channel separating the inbound and outbound lanes of the Stuart Highway.
The Northern Territory News reports that, while the man was able to walk away from the red Land Rover, NT Fire and Rescue officers had to cut away the roof of the 4WD to remove the female passenger as a precaution in case she was suffering spinal injuries.
According to witnesses quoted by the newspaper, the caravan appeared to develop a wobble shortly before the Land Rover veered off the Highway, narrowly missing a guard rail.
