The rise and rise of the grey nomad lifestyle in Australia is being reflected in the types of vehicles on our roads … and that’s official!
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has just released its annual census of motor vehicles … and diesel cars and campervans are leading the growth charge. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that this change is consistent with an ageing population of baby-boomers pursuing the grey nomad lifestyle.
Statisticians found the number of registered campervans had leapt 21.6% since 2007, with 52,600 campervans now registered. The number of diesel-fuelled passenger cars on the roads has more than doubled in five years, up 103%, from 434,000 to 882,000 cars. There has been a 10.9% increase in the total number of cars on the road since 2007, with 12.7 million now plying the highways and byways. There are a total of 16.7 million registered motor vehicles of all types in Australia, including trucks, vans and bikes.
The most prevalent vehicle brand on the road is Toyota, with 2.5 million registrations, ahead of Holden with 2.05 million and Ford with 1.6 million. The average age of cars on the road is 10 years.
