A man in his late 60s has suffered horrific injuries in a freak accident while attempting to hitch up his caravan in WA’s south-west.
Rangers at the Logue Brook Dam camping area north of Bunbury were doing their rounds when they came across the man on his own and in severe pain.
It is understood his leg had been snapped in half.
The West Australian newspaper reports that the man was attempting to fasten his caravan onto his car yesterday afternoon, when the caravan came loose, piercing his leg and snapping it in half.
It is believed the incident, in which the man may have failed to correctly hook his caravan onto his vehicle, had taken place more than two hours earlier.
Booking for the Logue Brook Dam camping area is made through the nearby Lake Brockman Tourist Park.
Park Manager Jack Bennett told the West Australian that it was a ‘freak accident’ and that the injuries seemed ‘quite bad’.
“He was behind it and it’s broke his leg in half and pierced it,” Mr Brockman said. “He was laying there for about three hours before someone came … the guys from DPAW were just doing laps around, checking up on everything, and saw the caravan in the water.”
Mr Bennett told the West Australian that the caravan was left half-submerged in water along the edge of the dam.
“We’ve just pulled the caravan out of the water,” he said. “It sort of just went back and water was just lapping over it.”
Local ambulances and police attended the scene and the injured man was eventually airlifted to Perth via RAC helicopter.
The extent of the man’s injuries are still unclear and it is unknown what condition the man is currently in.
