The holiday road toll has fallen by more than 40%, with 28 people killed on our roads in the Christmas-New Year holiday period, compared to 48 in 2012-13.
Seven people died on NSW roads, five in each of Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, and three in Tasmania. One fatality was recorded in the ACT, Northern Territory and South Australia.
During the same period in 2010-11, 50 people died.
The national road toll period ran from midnight on 23 December, 2013, until 11.59pm on 3 January, 2014, local times.
Do you try to avoid travelling during the busy holiday periods? How can we reduce our road toll further? Comment below.
I’m surprised there are any Deaths Due to the Price of Fuel 90 % in Tax..Surely that can’t be right
We stay home Christmas and Easter, too many impatient drivers on the road. Some drivers seem to be unaware that a heavy vehicle towing a heavy vehicle takes longer and requires more room to stop. It actually surprises me that the road toll is not higher. Example. Travelling at the speed limit, not towing, a car used the left hand turn lane and then the left merge lane to overtake me. P Plates of course, I think these drivers are in a hurry to attend their own funeral.
This is the first time I have travelled during the Christmas and Easter holidays, due to the traffic and impatient drivers. However, there were two impatient drivers honking at my slow pace driving, due to the large vehicle I was learning to cope with. One a truckie and another driver, waiting patiently at the next turn off when I arrived!!! I also had the driving light of my vehicle pinched while resting overnight. Do people think buying tow vehicles or other types, are free to the owners. I spent years doing a lot of night shifts to get enough funds for my camping vehicle as opposed to tenting, for someone else to think it was their right to take from me. I suggest that person or people, get a job like others do and actually earn what they want instead of thinking it is there for their taking, no questions asked.
Also travellers taking risks passing over double lines and intersection lanes to by pass a slower vehicle. I just put it down to people wanting to die sooner than later and also involve other road users. Patience is a virtue and it should be practised especially when on busy road ways and holiday times.
