It’s been another absolute scorcher in much of the country and grey nomads have been left looking for ways to keep their cool.
Searing temperatures have baked much of New South Wales and Victoria again, and the mercury is not expected to drop to average January temperatures for at least a week.
Wilcannia in northwest NSW was expected to reach a blistering 43C today, and in areas straddling the state’s border with Queensland – such as near Moree and Goondiwindi – many centres are set to record one of their hottest Januarys on record.
And Victorians are being warned that a heatwave and high humidity will smash their state this long Australia Day weekend. Temperatures are expected to soar into the 40s across most parts of the state with humidity also soaring.
Bureau of Meteorology state manager Andrew Tupper said there was a real risk people in Victoria ‘might be going a bit troppo over the next few days’.
“We are going to get quite sultry, oppressive conditions and we are really going to be feeling it,” Dr Tupper said. “It is going to be pretty feral on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in particular … it is going to feel like we are not getting much relief.”
He said it was the monsoonal season in Australia’s north and, when this comes down, it can be a shock to the system.
