For grey nomads travelling in inland parts of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and northern Victoria, the message is a stark one … get ready for some serious heat!
What the Sydney Morning Herald has dubbed ‘this summer’s most extensive, and brutal, heatwave’ is building over central and eastern Australia … and it’s going to leave locals and travellers alike sweltering for a few days yet.
Mildura in Victoria is expected to get two days of 44 degrees today and tomorrow, Bourke in inland New South Wales is expected to hit 47 degrees on Sunday, Birdsville in Queensland continues to sweat its way through a seemingly endless string of above-43 degree days, and Moomba in South Australia is predicted to complete a sapping six-day stretch above 45 degrees.
“We’ve had a high pressure system sitting across southern Queensland and northern New South Wales for weeks now, and it’s been preventing any frontal systems coming through and flushing out all of that really hot air,” Meteorologist Andrea Pearce told the SMH. “We’ve had over 40 degrees in many, many locations and we expect that to continue … we see a relentless pool of temperatures above 40 degrees.”
However, all is not lost. The Bureau of Meteorology says that a new weather front will start to move through the country on Sunday, dropping the mercury in most of Victoria and South Australia. It says that New South Wales should then also begin to feel the cool change, followed by Queensland.

Travelled from Adelaide to Whyalla today. Car was displaying 47C around Port Augusta. Don’t think it was that hot but certainly hot enough.
That 47 C was correct !
When it is too hot to sit in a van onsite, the best activity is to go on a drive and be in the air conditioning. Unless you are camped nearer some water that you can sit in to cool down from time to time.
Look out for other travellers that look like they are going on walks without hats or water bottles!
