If we serve beer, then the grey nomads will come

Published: July 8, 2014

The Gerogery Hotel in the New South Wales Riverina district has a new owner … and he’s keen to invite grey nomads over for a beer.

James Treloar has taken out a 25-year lease on the pub and wants to promote the site as a place for caravans to park for the night. He hopes grey nomads and families will take him up on the offer.

β€œIt’s a small country town on a country highway and I want to target the traffic coming through,” Mr Treloar told the Border Mail newspaper.

As part of the strategy for the business, Mr Treloar also hopes to increase business hours from Friday, Saturday and Sunday to seven days a week. He also wants to run a courtesy bus into town to attract youngerΒ Albury-Wodonga folk. And he’s keen to continue live music on Sundays and organise trivia nights.

Mr Treloar, who will continue to live in Broome, hopes to take over more pubs in the next five years and may implement the same grey nomad friendly model..

He says modern technology will be able him to run the pubs form a remote location.

β€œI will have cameras installed in the hotel but it’s not about trust,” he told the Border Mail. β€œI want to be able to see who is walking in so I can say β€˜shout them a beer’.”

Would you park up for the night at Gerogery? Is this a great idea for all country pubs? Comment below.

We have a 5 wheeler….love meeting fellow travellers, love music we could set up our karaoke equipment fairly easily ….great fun for wannabee singers. This sounds like a top place to spend a couple of days….keep us informed!

Smart move Mr Treloar. Should be more towns and people doing the same thing to attract the many of us nomads πŸ™‚ Nothing we like better than a fair deal!

Love the idea of camping out the back of the pub . Great when there is a band playing means you can stay and have a few more beers and listen right till then end of the show. Will have to put that one on my bucket list… cheers

love the atmosphere when staying at these small pubs. Talking to the locals is how we find out the history & the less touristy good spots to check out in the area

Would definitely stay if I was in the area. I will add this to my outback/country pub stopover. Well done. A winner for sure.

Great idea, I hope more country pubs take this on. I know some do, we had a great meal at the Tammin Hotel WA and stayed in their yard overnight. Have done the same at other country towns, I would rather spend $30 X 2 on a couple of great meals than stay in a caravan park.

Great Move of course…Be hard to beat the one at Yambah Qld Most of the other pub owners are too stupid to do this though But I have no doubt they will wake up one day

Mr Treloar, would you like to do the same at Broome, Pt Hedland, Karratha etc where caravan parks are so expensive you would be inundated with many wanting just a night or two in the larger towns. Great area but it is also where the GNs seek out the low cost places!
