Massive chunk of beach near campsite collapses

Published: September 24, 2018

Another massive chunk of beach next to a hugely popular Queensland camping area has disappeared into the sea.

The latest collapse at Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach is reportedly even more significant than the incident three years ago  in which a giant hole appeared to swallow a caravan, a trailer, a car, and several tents, putting  campers at risk.

There was then a smaller collapse a year later.

Glen Cruickshank from Rainbow Beach Helicopters told the ABC the new hole was larger than the  one which caused international headlines in 2015.

“I’d have to say this is slightly bigger,” he said. “This new hole — it’s through the beach, it’s through the trees, it’s a round hole, quite deep and quite big.”

He said it was a few hundred metres from where the previous two appeared.

“With all the three sinkholes that have been there, they have all been in an area that’s only 400 metres between them.

Double Island Point Fishing Charters posted on Facebook estimating the hole was 7.5 metres deep.

Geotechnical engineer Allison Golsby has preciously told the ABC that there were fears Inskip Point might eventually disappear. She said the camping site should have had a monitoring system to warn of any further disasters.

Certainly would. Too dangerous to take the risk.

We were parked at a clifftop spit overlook the Great Australian Bight on one occasion & contemplated parking there for the night but decided against it as the limestone cliffs looked fragile & it was a long drop down to the sea.

It’s the climate change I tell ya.

Nothing a few $$$$billion gifted from our new found Foreign Affairs Minister wouldn’t fix.
