Published: February 10, 2023

A caravan has been stolen from a popular Queensland camping area.

Police are investigating the theft of a 1998 Jayco Westport from MV Beagle camping area at Inskip Point in the Gympie region.

The white-coloured van was taken away some time between 6pm and 9.30pm on Friday, February 3.

It has two faded blue stripes down both sides, and Queensland registration plates: 609QTH and described.

It does not have Jayco rims attached, as they have been replaced with 12 bolt rims (pictured).

Officers from Tin Can Bay Station are seeking assistance from the public.

It is not worth a lot of money, so I would be looking at homeless camps first.

Expensive caravan or not – it is still someone’s pride and joy. Hopefully it can be recovered undamaged.

Yep agree it is someone’s pride & joy now there dream holiday is cut short because of selfish thugs. Just hope the insurance covers everything plus the personal items that went with it

I use an apple air tag, which is hidden in the van. Not foolproof but better than nothing. Cost approx $45

I think the time has come for every owner to have a gps tracker on every van ,car ,trailer , even motorcycles. I mean insurance companies should be on board with this ,offering a small discount if fitted. Honestly have to stop theft , isn’t this the way?

Agree whole heartedly. My treasured motorcycle which is not worth a lot now was stolen from my garage about 3 am then used to do breaking, broke my heart. It set me back a few dollars and a lot of inconvenience and months to get it back when it was recovered. These poor caravanners must be beside themselves having their personal possessions taken along with a treasured van.

I have a wheel lock on it. Which also covers the wheel nuts.

What precautions should one take ? That’s a good question – I would be very disappointed to have your van stolen but what precautions do I have to take seeing that I insure the van at an exuberant price.
I mean if the van is stock standard as the manufacturer has made it then that’s the best security they offer so why should I put on more security at my extra expense.
I Chain the coupling, put on a wheel lock and make sure I lock it when am not in it.
I feel that’s enough from me the rest of the risk is for the insurance company to take, if they want more precautions then they can get the manufacturer to put them on as standard equipment like they did to the car industry.
