A motorist can count himself extremely lucky to have escaped serious injury after a safety light fell off a passing road train and smashed into his car.
The incident happened on Bindi Bindi bends on Western Australia’s Great Northern Highway. The driver reportedly heard an almighty bang as the road train whizzed by, and then found a safety light had come off the truck and rocketed straight through his bumper and lodged behind it.
The Central Midlands and Coastal Advocate newspaper reports that the driver was extremely lucky not to have had the safety light go through his windscreen.
Apparently, this type of thing is much more common than one would think and is clearly an issue that can affect grey nomads.
The paper reports that traffic levels on the Great Northern Highway have increased to unbelievable proportions in the past few years and there have been a number of ‘close calls’ with vehicles nearly being hit by parts of loads falling off trucks.
Last year in one such incident, a two-tonne part, on its way to a mine site, was discovered after it had dropped off the road train carrying it. Incredibly, the driver of the road train reportedly did not even know he had lost part of his load.
Of course it is not just truck drivers that lose part of their load on occasion. There are always stories doing the rounds of surfboards flying off roof racks, or people losing items of newly bought furniture out the back of their vehicles.
Grey nomads themselves are not immune to mistakes when everything from cycles to Portaloos are strapped on for long trips along sometimes bumpy roads.
