Melbourne is freezing. Even places like Coffs Harbour are pretty darned chilly. And it remains to be seen how far north grey nomads in the east are going to have to head to escape the icy clutches of what looks like being a pretty severe winter.
The Bureau of Meteorology is already warning that the El Niño weather pattern could mean a particularly cold Queensland this year. Bureau of Meteorology senior climate liaison officer Dr Jeff Sabburg is speculating that even Brisbane’s bayside suburbs such as Redcliffe could experience freezing temperatures.
And that has happened only twice before … on July 7, 1982 and on August 2, 1995 … both El Niño years.
Yesterday, Warwick was the coldest place in the state with the temperature hitting -3.3°C at 5.52am, and Kingaroy was down to -2.7°C at 5.44am.
Earlier this week, north Queensland temperatures were 3 degrees below average, with Mackay getting down to 10.
“It’s more because the air’s so dry, so when you get a night where it’s still and fairly clear skies it allows the temperature to radiate out into space fairly quickly,” forecaster David Bernard told the ABC. “Daytime temperatures, they won’t be too bad.”
A bit chilly here in Proserpine this morning. Didn’t get up until 8am. Sitting in the sunshine to warm up now at 9am.
