As the average size of caravans and motorhomes has grown, it is a common complaint from grey nomads in ‘big rigs’ that caravan park infrastructure has failed to keep pace.
However, it’s not an accusation that is likely to be levelled at the newly renovated Kingscliff Beach Holiday Park in Kingscliff in northern New South Wales.
The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that the idea was that the new and improved park – which is due to re-open on March 22 – was to offer visitors something different than what was there before.
“Every site in the park is two-to-three times larger than what the sites were in the old park,” Tweed Coast Holiday Parks unit coordinator Andrew Illingworth told a Kingscliff and District Chamber of Commerce breakfast. “You’re losing a lot of site space to provide the infrastructure to cater for modern, touring vans.”
The upgrade, however, has reduced the number of registered sites. There will be 44 tourist sites including a number of what are being called premium beach-front tourist sites, nine tent sites, and eight cabins.
Other improvements include synthetic grass around the place and wider roads.
The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive, with more than 600 people reserving a spot at the in the first hour of online reservations being made available last week. In the first five-and-a-half days of booking, more than 1500 reservations were made, which apparently equates to more than $500,000 in revenue.
The Bulletin reports that the predicted popularity of the park will come as a welcome relief to local shop owners, many of whom have suffered financially since the caravan park closed 12 months ago to undergo the major refurbishment.
That’s great news as long as the prices don’t up. Finding CP’s with large sites hasn’t been too much of problem for us, we have a 31’ motorhome. As long as we phone beforehand we usually get in. But it’ll be nice not to have the next sites van sitting inside the annex, which I’m sure everyone complains about.
Of course the prices will rise, you can’t expect the site numbers to doubled in size and halved in numbers for the same price as before, that is totally unrealistic, the small vanner will have to go elsewhere or pay for the comfort of extra space, simple as that.
This will be an upmarket lark and I might add,it is well needed in these times too.
What is the costing for a nights stay.
Prices will go up so it means those of us with small vans will have to pay too. Not happy
Hope they address the crime in the park as well. It was shocking a few years ago!
That’s great news in hearing that the sites are larger. As I’ve got a van that is 31 half foot in total length and I have trouble finding a caravan park that can fit me in. Sometimes they have the site but the road is to narrow and the access is very difficult with my Landcruiser. As some don’t realise that in total I’m close to 50 ft long and you need room to move. More parks need to change
Why the heck do you need something that big? Do you have several people travelling with you…….. I don’t get it otherwise
If your confined to a small 18 to 20 footer for a long time i would go nuts. Maybe this 31 footer is all they have and maybe they dont have a house.
Good on you Liz. I’m seperated. No house anymore. 31 foot ‘home’ and small car. Need space
Because for many of us our rig i our home
Agree tottaly with your comment. We also have a van just over 30 foot total length and tow with a Ford F250 which is just over 20 foot long. Usually roads are so narrow we cannot get the turning space to back in.
I fully agree
This is the best news we have heard. We had several holidays in the park however when we bought a larger van we couldn’t fit on a sight so we went elsewhere. We were often placed between the old permanents that were there, which was very off putting. We always supported the local businesses so will be very pleased to return
