A bushfire which had been threatening the Hidden Valley Caravan Park in Kununurra has now been brought under control.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) says there is no longer a threat to lives and property, and the ‘watch and act’ level alert it issued late yesterday has been downgraded.
The West Australian newspaper reports that there is still a lot of smoke in the area and the blaze continues to burn in bushland north of Victoria Highway and east of Weaber Plains Road.
The fire which forced the closure of Mirima National Park was said to have been ‘suspicious’. It was first reported at midday yesterday and it caused serious concern as it burned in a north westerly direction towards the caravan park.
While the blaze is no longer as threatening, firefighters are still at the scene trying to extinguish the fire and strengthening containment lines.
DFES says people in the area should stay up to date in case the situation changes.
The West Australian reports that suspicious fires are also burning near the Duncan Road and Nicholson River Station intersection in the Shire of Halls Creek and on the Victoria Highway between Lake Argyle Road and Crossing Falls Road.
