Geoff and Bev

Grey nomads of Australia caption

Sydneysiders Geoff, 67, & wife Bev (Coxy45) love to cook on the campfire

What do you travel in?
Millard Horizon 17’. It’s light to tow.

How long do you travel?
We are generally on the road for 3-4 months at a time.

Where do you like to camp?
Free camps. I like the freedom of doing things “my way” rather than be crammed into sites at caravan parks.

Likes of the lifestyle?
We like making new friends and sharing a campfire with other caravanners.

… and dislikes?Geoff-and-Bev-Recipe3
We don’t like the return trip back to Sydney! Or overpriced caravan parks.

Has your outlook changed?
Mainly in that we no longer choose to use caravan parks, preferring free camping.

What wouldn’t you be without?
My generator.

Favourite place to camp?
Longreach. It’s a great outback town and there’s a great free camp only 4 kms from town.

Scariest nomad experience?
I was driving from Boulia to Winton on a single-lane road through very heavy rain when I met a road train coming the other way. I had to ‘get off’ the road into the mud to let it pass! I was very lucky I didn’t get bogged! A very scary experience.

Any on the-road hobbies?
Campfire cooking. We have two camp ovens, one for meals, the other one for damper & bread, and a jumbo-sized jaffle iron. (Geoff and Bev share their favourite camp oven recipe with us, right).

Tips for wannabe nomads?
Don’t plan too far ahead when on a big trip, as you will learn from other travellers about some beaut spots along the way. Just do it, your current life is NOT a dress rehearsal for the next life. So get out there and enjoy yourself
