Dianne and Greg

After 11 years in Tassie, Dianne and Greg, both, 61, are living the dream full time on the road. The budget is pretty tight … but that doesn’t make the adventure any less amazing

What do you travel in?
A Spinifex Nomadix 23’ off-road pulled by a LandCruiser ’76 series affectionately called ‘Landy’. The set-up is robust enough for us to travel anywhere comfortably. It has a huge bathroom and a great roomy shower, and a lovely layout. It’s easy to tow and to set up … and it’s home.

How long as ‘full-timers’?
We are newbies compared to most, only seven months, but we are looking forward to a lifetime on the road with each other.

Where do you like to camp?
We are on a fairly strict budget so we free camp mostly and are pleased that there are these sorts of places to allow us to live this lifestyle. We love the solitude and the quiet, and free camps seem to offer that more than caravan parks. We occasionally stay in caravan parks if we need to catch up on washing and we stop anywhere where there are interesting or unusual things to see and do. We also do house/property sitting which allows us the freedom to explore that particular area.

Likes of the lifestyle?
No stress. We also enjoy interaction and sharing of tips and stories around the campfire at Happy Hour.

… and dislikes?
Storms, cyclones, wind and hail, rudeness and the inconsiderate behaviour of some backpackers.

On the-road hobbies?
Reading, going on the computer, learning about family history, and card making. Greg loves fishing, photography, blogging, and swapping ideas with other travellers.

What wouldn’t you be without?
12-volt fans in the bedroom area with a timer are a lifesaver in hot humid weather, the barbecue, and the automatic self-levelling airbag suspension makes setting up a breeze.

Favourite campsite?
Wannangatta Station in the Victorian high country. It was very peaceful and tranquil and we loved seeing pioneer life in the high country. Also, Bedford Weir in Queensland as we had fantastic company and many laughs.

Scariest nomad experience?
On the first night after purchasing our van, we had a huge storm at Granite Creek rest stop. There was lightning and thunder directly overhead and huge rainfall, so at least we found out early the van didn’t leak.

Tips for other nomads?
Take your time, drive to your ability and consider doing a tow-ed course to learn how to handle your rig with confidence.

… and wannabe nomads?
Make sure you stay within your budget whether you are on road full or part time. Research both your caravan and tow vehicle well and, in particular, towing capabilities. If all the sums add up, then don’t waste any time. Go now!
