Perth couple Judy, 67, and Ben, 68, are downsizing their home … and upsizing their travelling. While they love the west and the wonders of Karijini and the Bungle Bungles in particular, they love to head east, too.
What do you travel in?
Mitsubishi Diesel Pajero with Ranger Panorama caravan. It has a shower, toilet, solar panel, and most other conveniences.
How long do travel for?
Our last trip was eight months. The trip we are currently on will be for 18 months. Future ones for around four to five months.
Where do you like to camp?
We like caravan parks, national parks and free camps … but have been staying in caravan parks 70% of the time, because of the general comfort they provide.
Likes of the lifestyle?
The freedom of being able to do what we want, with no set time schedules.
Any dislikes?
Not really, although we wouldn’t want to be in a large storm when on the road!
Have your plans changed?
Yes! We realise we don’t need a large house and will be downsizing to a smaller one. The extra capital gained will be used for travelling.
On the-road hobbies?
Judy: Reading and crocheting/knitting blankets and hand towels etc. Ben: Photography, computer work and reading
Favourite place to camp?
We loved camping in the Bungle Bungles and in Karijini in WA. Also, most of the east coast of NSW and Qld.
What wouldn’t you be without?
Laptop computer, Kindle e-book reader (this has saved us a lot of weight and space in the van), iPad, camera … and bathers and beach chairs!
Scariest nomad experience?
On arrival at one of our destinations we discovered that the towball had worked loose and, if it had travelled further, the whole rig would have separated!
Tips for other nomads?
Do not listen too much to other travellers’ negative tales about places they went to and didn’t like. Everyone sees things differently and a lot depends on differing circumstances. Take advice on board by all means, but go with your gut feelings – you have nothing to lose.
Advice for wannabe nomads?
Carefully consider the type of rig/accommodation you will be using, as this will go a long way to the enjoyment of it all.
