Having first started vanning 27 years ago, Philip & Vicki B (58 & 56) from Queanbeyan, have learned to value their space
What rig do you have?
A 2013 LandCruiser Sahara TTD pulling a 2014 Jayco Silverline 21.65-4. On our recent trip (mid-May to mid-Oct 2014) where we covered 24,000kms, the van proved easy to tow, set up and extremely comfortable. We were on the road for 147 days and, at no time, felt as though we were living on top of each other. The double slide-out (lounge and bed) made us feel we were living in a bed-sitter. The van has a full ensuite; a 3.0kg washing machine; full LED lighting throughout; and an enormous front boot.
So, it’s the perfect rig?
Well, this recent trip has given us a taste for the Outback, so we are now seriously looking at purchasing a dedicated off-road camper to enable us to explore deeper into it.
Where do you like to camp?
Everywhere! National parks offer great camping locations, and we also like free camping near country towns for short stays. Other locations dictate staying within the town limits and making full use of caravan park facilities, but we do also find bush camping alongside a river or dam good for the soul.
Likes of the lifestyle?
Foremost, is the opportunity to see this great country, and then it’s the people you meet.
Any dislikes?
The litter dropped by irresponsible travellers. The worst location we found on our recent trip would have to be the intersection of Lasseter Highway and Luritja Road, Northern Territory. Honestly, is it so difficult to put your rubbish in the bin? The ocuncil could do more, too.
Do you keep a journal?
On our latest trip, I kept a diary for the first time. I filled an A4 size exercise book and then some.
What wouldn’t you be without?
For free-stays, the generator and solar panels are a must-pack item. I do enjoy our Snow Peak Fire Pit – so versatile and it flat packs into the front boot of the caravan.
Favourite place to camp?
The Pilbara and Kimberley has so much to offer, while Litchfield NP punches above its weight. Then, there’s Kakadu. Why do so many people talk about Kakadon’t? What a great place to explore, especially Ubirr, which is sensational, as are the many gorges and falls.
Scariest nomad experience?
Nearly running out of fuel on the Tablelands Highway, NT, in 2011. Lesson learned. Always keep the Jerry cans full.
Tips for fellow nomads?
If you don’t have a UHF radio, think of investing in one. And, if your bum looks too heavy, it probably is, and you need to really sort out your weights (car and caravan). There are far too many instances of ‘the tail wagging the dog’. If you haven’t towed a caravan before, think of taking a lesson from a training organisation.
