Victorians Terry and Rosemary, aged between 60 and 70, are ready to roll. They have enjoyed many, many ‘shorter’ caravanning trips dating back to the ’70s but now retirement is here, they are well and truly up for the Big One!
What do you travel in?
The vehicle is a Nissan Patrol 3 litre Common Rail Diesel. The caravan is a 2011 Galaxy Odyssey pop top on a tandem axle, known as Spock. It’s 20 feet long with a combination shower and toilet. We have a Queen size bed, hot water service etc. One 80 watt solar power panel on the roof, 2 x 100 amp hr batteries and a Honda EU20i generator.
Why does your rig suit you?
We have been caravanning since the ’70s so bigger and better equipment has been a natural progression. Finally we have the equipment we need to really go to the places we want to visit. Not necessarily really out of the way but ‘out there’. We did the Oodnadatta Track last year and saw Lake Eyre with water in.
How long are your trips?
We live in Ferntree Gully, Victoria, and – up until now – we have been constrained by returning to work. Now retirement is here, trips will be open ended.
Where do you like to camp?
We are set up for free camping and do that, as well as use smaller country town caravan parks.
Best thing about the lifestyle?
The freedom of choice, the beautiful country to explore. All the superlatives you can think of will cover it.
On the-road hobbies?
Meeting people and making new friends/acquaintances. Walking, bike riding, a bit of surf fishing, reading, and staying in touch with family and friends via email.
Favourite place to camp?
Just about everywhere we have camped is a favourite. Hard to narrow down to one.
Scariest nomad experience?
Hitting a pothole in one of Queensland’s roads and writing off a caravan. The scariest 30 seconds of our lives.
Tips for grey nomads?
Take your time. Drive within your limits be it speed or time and distance. Stay cheerful … it is too taxing to be grumpy.
… and wannabe nomads?
Do it. Can’t be beaten. Of course, not everyone is suited to the lifestyle. It has to be tried so you can find out if it suits you.
