Grey nomads are pretty much universally disgusted by the rubbish they find in many roadside stops and campsites … and most feel compelled to do something about it.
Some 89% of respondents to our recent poll on the subject said that, when they come across a ‘messy’ camping area, they normally do a clean-up for the greater good.
Owen W said he arrived at a site near Gunbower recently which was ‘pretty grubby’.

“We had a fire so we burnt the paper around the site and picked up glass, aluminium and plastics,” he said. “All was taken into town and placed in a public bin.”
Fred W says he just can’t help himself when he finds a mess.
“I get out the long tongs, put on the gloves, and use a single use plastic bag to collect the rubbish,” he said. “I tie it off and bin it, so it’s harder for the crows to get at and spread.”
Col and Adrianne W said they were also ready to do their bit.
“We have no problem relocating scattered refuse and shovelling dirt on open toilet sites,” they said. “We like to leave a site ready for the next travellers.”
Bob D is another ‘cleaner upper’ and he says he’s definitely not alone.
“I belong to a caravan club and everybody cleans up after themselves and often picks up rubbish left by others,” he said. “This helps to supply a clean site when we set up.”
And Denise H says she is ready for pretty much anything.
“I have disposable gloves for the really gross stuff like toilet paper,” she said.
Basil W says he hates finding sites left in a disgusting state.
“And, if we don’t shift it, it looks like we have dropped it,” he said. “Unfortunately
there are some who just don’t care.”
And Morag G is another who says she always carry gloves, bags and a tool for picking up rubbish.
“I feel good about leaving the spot a little cleaner for others,” she said.
