‘We’re camping in paradise … but it doesn’t feel like it!’

Published: September 1, 2021

The ongoing issue of campsite littering continues to rear its ugly head at beauty spots up and down the country.

The latest area to be put in the spotlight is Queensland’s Double Island Point. The popular camping area  is on the next headland north of Noosa and is within the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park.

Recent warm weather has seen camping numbers there spike … along with the amount of rubbish left behind!

Recent camper Nicole Bragg said she was outraged when she saw the state of the place.

“Where we camped, I filled three jumbo rubbish bags up and two full boxes up and took it to the bins where it belonged,” she said on a Facebook post.

The Courier-Mail newspaper issue is the latest in a string of problems facing beaches between the Gympie region and Noosa and coincides with a police crackdown on hoons tearing up Teewah Beach.

A Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science spokesperson told the Courier-Mail that the way the area was left was a ‘total disrespect for the environment and the camping experience of others’.

“When our rangers have to deal with preventable issues such as rubbish,” they said, “it adds to the cost of managing the area and reduces the time they can spend on the important work of protecting the park estate.”

The department is appealing for public information to find those responsible. Anyone with any photos or information is encouraged to contact rangers on 1300 130 372.

Dead right
It does get worse. People leaving tents and quick shade structures just left on a beach or bush
People can’t even put a beer can in the bin at home. Just chuck it out the car window
What hope has this planet got with filthy grubs line that.

Had to take a second look at the picture. I thought it was a picture of Flemington Race track after a Melbourne Cup event. They must be the same people that were at that camp 🙂

I despair at the lack of respect for the landscape by some of the rubbish I find at sites. Not really surprising though. I can measure the distance from my place to the nearest fast food outlet by the rubbish thrown from car windows. I am around one hamburger and a large fries away.

We were at Kingston SE a couple of years ago and there in the free camping area near the beach was a couple of cheap tents, camp chairs and sleeping bags, cooking gear etc, was told that a bunch of O/Seas back packers just left them and jumped into their Whiz bang and headed to the nearest airport to fly home.
There was also toilet paper in the long grass, there is a public toilet 2 minutes walk from there as well.
A council ute came and cleaned up the mess, absolutely brilliant town looking after the nomads and campers, go there when you can.
