Police investigating after two caravans stolen from Bendigo Showgrounds

Published: March 18, 2024

Two caravans that were parked in a popular showground have been stolen by brazen thieves.

Victoria Police says they are investigating the theft of the vans from Bendigo.

It is believed that unknown offender/s entered the Bendigo Showgrounds on Holmes Road in a white Izuzu utility between 1.30am and 2am on March 12.

Investigators believe the offender/s have then broken the trailer locks on the two CRM caravans, before towing both from the car park with the Izuzu.

The caravans are both grey in colour with a distinctive blue decal.

Police have released images of the Izuzu and the stolen caravans in the hope that someone with information will come forward.

Sadly, caravan theft remains a significant – and growing – problem. And it’s an issue that is not restricted to one part of the country.

Grey nomads, like all caravaners, are increasingly aware of the potential of having their on-the-road home stolen … and most take steps to ensure they are not victims.

Options include putting on wheel clamps, installing caravan security alarms, using coupling locks, and fitting caravan tracking devices.

And, of course, it makes sense to make sure your pride and joy is properly insured in the event of the unthinkable happening.

Cable through wheels draw bar lock and electric breaks locked on but if they want it they will. Take it satellite tracking would be a good idea to track them down

About to instal a Wi Ti security system.

Definitely install WiTi Anti-Theft. When the alarm triggers and the brakes lock there’s no way to move it. Plus the GPS let’s you know via the app if the alarm has triggered.

They just drag it onto a tilt tray or cut the wires to the brakes. Smart thieves use cheap GPS jammers.

Over the past 15 1/2 years our trusty Blue Heeler has guarded our caravan but sadly she’s no longer as fearsome as she once was being almost deaf. We ended up fitting an alarm system from RV Secure (Platinum X). We also use a lock on the DO35 but know that the hitches are easy enough to unbolt so I will spot weld the nuts before our next trip.
It’s a sad reflection on modern life that there are scum out there who will go to such lengths to steal property!
Despite being almost deaf, I wouldn’t want to see the damage our dog could inflict upon one of these scum-bags should one find themselves in our van uninvited…

How sad your Old Bluer Heeler is now getting Deaf as Yes a good Blue Heeler Guard Dog Securely tied near to the Caravan Hitch would put Paid to this Sickening behaviour along with giving the Thieves a good BITE IBet.

We had our van stollen from our property in an outer Melbourne suburb with coupling lock and wheel lock, just dragged up onto a tilt trailer and away they went, never seen again and treated like we arranged it by insurance company took several months to get paid out.

Who’d want to steal my 1998 Jayco or for that matter the equally aged GQ Patrol.

Housing is desperate for people. Put the van on a property, change a few id identifiers and they have another income.

I use a coupling lock, and if the location looks a bit unsavoury, I put on a wheel clamp as well …… with a sticker on it which reads “tracking device installed”.

Caravan theft is of concern to me mainly because you are so far away from home. I insured it, I lock the coupling and I engage the van mover. What else can you do. You can’t just sit there watching.

While I have both wheel and hitch locks. I have a Apple Air Tag hidden in our van.

Well worth buying. As you pair it with your find my phone on my iPhone.

There only $50. Or $160 for four. We leave our van at Rosebud over Christmas and I can check that it’s still there while we’re back in Melbourne .

There are other makes of tags to use.

Well worth the peace of mind

Interesting that they stole two vans of the same make. Equally interesting that they knew the owners were out/away overnight. More to this story than meets the eye me thinks…

This was a bit weird. Stolen between 1.30am and 2.30am, where were the owners at that time of night, were they asleep and and taken with the van. I’ve never seen a van with no owners there overnight in any showgrounds that we have ever stayed at.

Where were the owners of the vans at 1.30am in the morning if not asleep in the vans?

Maybe someone could verify, but weren’t they stolen from the Caravan & Camping Show site.

If they were then that would explain a lot.
